Margaret qualified as a Trained General Nurse and completed a post-basic course in Intensive Care at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in the 1960’s and later qualified as an Obstetric Nurse.  Margaret worked at various hospitals in Melbourne including St Vincent’s Public and Private Hospitals.

Following this Margaret worked for 38 years as a para-legal at the Melbourne Office of law firm Ashurst.

Margaret is a Trustee of The Scobie and Claire Mackinnon Trust.

 For her service to migrant children and their families through the establishment of Friday Night School, Margaret has been recognised and honoured with being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2004, conferred Doctor of the University (honoris causa) by Australian Catholic University in 2007, appointed a Dame of the Order of St Gregory the Great in 2009 and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
